Project Type : Conservation

Project is timebound? : Yes

Project Start Date : March 5, 2018

This project will enable data to start making Action plan for conservation of Balkan Terrapin as soon as possible. By defining the demographical characteristics of populations and species ecology, we will be able to form general and specific conservation measures. Thanks to these measures it will be easier to implement future Action plans for conservation of Balkan Terrapin. Defined measures will enable us to include conservation measures for protection of freshwater habitats, and species that live there, in process of Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment. Establishing the borders of areal of Balkan Terrapin and population status will speed up the process of creating NATURA 2000 network in Montenegro.

Thanks to these data, Department for environmental inspection will sanction additional irregularities in field. The participants of this project as well as wider community will be incorporated and will create additional pressure on decision makers. Population genotypes will be determined by DNA sample analysis. In this way, in the case of seized unverified tortoise they can be returned to their population. All targeted groups (including local population) would get more informed about mentioned issues and its possible solutions by the projects web page, social networks, television and radio stations and promotional materials.
