India holds the only known remaining breeding grounds for the Vulnerable Indian Skimmer Rynchops albicollis. BNHS is studying its distribution and status in the National Chambal Sanctuary. In the twenty-two nesting locations identified within the sanctuary, threats to the nests were recorded from dogs, local people and sand miners.

Based on baseline data collected so far on breeding population and their low nesting success, we submitted a detailed conservation recommendation to the Madhya Pradesh government, now included in the management plan of the sanctuary. Having received the necessary government permission, over a hundred Indian Skimmers were ringed at Chambal to better understand their population ecology and migration pattern. Indian Skimmer is a winter visitor to Bangladesh; we hope to forge collaborations with researchers there to understand its status.
